Once upon a time, the King of France received a sprig of Lily of the Valley at the first of May as a good luck charm.

This morning when I awoke I could not wait to go to the market — I could not wait to smell the sweet perfume of these bell shaped buds and watch a centuries old tradition play out. As tradition goes, you offer at least one sprig “au moins un brin de muguet” for luck to someone on the first of May. King Charles IX who began this tradition in 1561, gave a sprig to each of the ladies at court. A sweet wish of good luck.

When I returned home, outside my door was a tiny bouquet from my French neighbor, whom I leave roses for from time to time, accompanied by a note: “Merci pour les belle roses et cette paisible relations"

... what luck 🤍
