Roses Month Day 14: Rose Bush

Every morning and late afternoon the past week I ask Eloise, “did you check the nest?” There, in the kitchen window ledge of our apartment, a pigeon has laid two eggs. It’s such a delight how slowly Eloise approaches the window to not scare the mama and her little coos melt my heart when she catches a glimpse of the eggs. The anticipation of the babies around the house is electric. It’s so silly, it’s just pigeons, but it’s also totally incredible… watching life begin, continue, watching quietly behind glass.

I thought it would be fun to paint a picture of this moment in May—Eloise and the nest, mama knee-deep in roses. It was a fun challenge to see if I could construct a rose bush from clippings and suspend a bird’s nest. It worked, and maybe this photograph is nothing, but it makes me smile because I remember the now, and the now is good.

Thank you @louisepascal for the old nest from your garden // @3_sources for the foraged rose clippings // and @chateau_charleval for the white fairytale roses // Eggs inspired this photograph discovered at today’s market
